Inspiration for our logo came from the Proctor area surrounding our office. After considering medical emblems, mountains, orca we realized we were looking for something unique. One of our doctors noticed Mason Plaza. He saw the large oak tree framing the plaza from behind and the bronze Star of Destiny in the sidewalk. He came away from that walk with the idea that the star and the oak tree should be part of our logo. And that clicked.
Alan C. Mason was an Illinois school teacher and chicken farmer who came to Tacoma in 1883. He developed housing units and soon became a millionaire. He is credited as the principal developer of Tacoma’s North End. An ardent champion for Tacoma, he developed the Star of Destiny as an advertisement to attract people and business. The large star has over 100 rays coming from the center, each a slogan proclaiming Tacoma’s attributes. A few of the slogans are as noted:
“Best lighted city in the Northwest”
“Undisputed center of the timber industry”
“Nights always cool and conducive to sound sleep”
“No poisonous bugs or reptiles”
“Only High School stadium in the world”
“Equable and healthful climate”
We agreed that this was the type of logo we were looking for. Something that tied into our appreciation for and involvement with our Tacoma and North End community. Check out Mason Plaza and the bronze Star of Destiny on the corner of N 26th and Adams Street. It is said to be good luck if you shake Mason’s hand!
